Our Story

It all started with a little worm bin on a windy balcony, five stories high, in the middle of Amsterdam. Five years ago, Jess, now know as Compost Lady or Earthworm Jessie, began composting food scraps for her and her housemate. While the box of adopted red wrigglers freaked out some of the household at first, the little critters worked hard day and night to help them achieve that zero waste lifestyle, and soon everyone was won over by the magic of the compost bin and the satisfaction it brings.

It feels pretty damn good to know you are not contributing to the global waste problem, but instead you are nuturing nature at the most fundamental level. Jess dreamt of offering this feel good factor to more people across the city. She went on to learn from two of the best! The sciency soil ladies. Completing the Soil Food Web course with Dr Elaine Ingham and learning a lot from Nicole Masters book For the Love of Soil.

Now we offer composting to households, offices, kitchen/cafes across Amsterdam and moreover, the Soil Food Web principles are deeply embedded in our composting process.
